Snow in the forecast
everything closes again
as if we knew how
to prevent mass injury
A new year begins
remembering what happens
when nothing changes
no way to tell a story
At least we are here
roads impassable frozen
stuff that could become
snowballs or men on the ground

Pieces of light are
brighter when they are at peace
listen—you will see
they are the same light

Driving home from church
lights on in every window
of the apartments
everyone staying
inside to spite the darkness
makes a festive glow
silhouettes all we have left

Light barely breaking
overhead blanket of clouds
keeping things colder
time to make the bed
steps sleep through the neighborhood
scratch the necks of cats
enough now call it a day

Unseasonable
weather we’re having lately
leaves a nasty stench
some creature ripped up
a pumpkin left on our stoop
pile of seeds and all
such waste untended
I’m sure the leaf blowers will
come again this week
propelling gas fumes
that certainly shorten lives
schools are shutting down
to combat copy
threats coming in from all sides
there is precedence
for everything that kills us

Now you’re on your own
only me beside you but
still you’re not alone
truly, no one is alone

Glad there’s a photo
of us standing and singing
everyone facing
the same direction
outside there is still some light
we walk into it
with grace gratefully
