    We might remember
    things that happened long ago
    because we knew them

    as the possible
    we have not experienced
    until they happened

    and then instead of
    remaining fixed in our minds
    they appear to be

    as far from us as
we want them to be because
    they are not over

    even forgotten
    they stay about to happen
    instant as distant

    events holding us in place

    Why with so much time
    infinitely spooling out
    is never enough

    no one knows how much
    easy platitudes to make
    the most of every

    moments all we have
    little do we acknowledge
    they are eternal

    why you remember
    unique characteristics
    no one may else know

    but for the telling
this is how the water breaks
    the gleaming of eyes

    the birth of the universe

    Write something about
    the way when singers end
    their consonants together
they might as well be one voice

    Write about how sometimes
    you cannot make out
    the words but you know
    by their faces the song

    Write something else about
    the only proof needed
    for the existence of God
    is music

    Century still young
    despite the fact that twenty
    years ago too soon

    what will we grow up
to be or not as the case
    may be will not yet

    this experience
too good not to share and yet
    know it leaves us still

    droning in endless
    cacophony grows restless
    even in the dark

    Probably not worth
    worrying about the world
    children inherit

    foregone conclusion
those who could make the biggest
    difference—didn’t

    Running out of time
    before getting to know you
    not sure what to do

    build some furniture
    maybe while wondering who
    you will be with us

    how eager you are
to take a first breath out here
    and make us breathless

    questioning no doubt
who we thought we were without
    your breathing with us

    turning inside out
what we thought we were about

Everybody seems to be rushing back
to bad habits that made society
so unlivable for so very long
    applaud proliferation of spittle
    in tightest quarters imaginable
even those who would overthrow the state
have a chance to win it all in midterms
what makes us incapable of taking
the evidence before us and making
    reasonable decisions like shaking
a plague to its knees by keeping distance
it wasn’t so unpleasant to fabric
our faces screaming inside of our hearts
togetherness keeps us a world apart

There might be time to know where the time goes
likely it will not be in this lifetime
    too many minutes to accumulate
preceded by hours decades months days years
seconds are the only response to sweets
worth taking into account or measure
abundance of molecules on the way
    to their dissolution insoluble
    energy neither created destroyed
by looking what might be the other way
universe ever expands to a point
in the distant past shared distinct by all
a spark the only light a burning flame
continues to kindle forgets its name

How fortunate to have a record of
these days I thought would never come again
and true to form they haven’t at least not
in nonverbal shapes the way a guitar
enables chords to ring out of thin air
disturbed by these vibrations static clay
responds by taking on a resemblance
    eventually out of the motion
it is easy to figure takes place once
only the universe begs to differ
these brief moments important years your life
written in permanent ink on the skin
the thin membrane that makes the past present
    particulars turn the same different

Falling over boxes in the basement
placed strategically badly in my dreams
where all the stuff seems to accumulate
    in anticipation of later points
heretofore unforeseen for a short time
wait awhile until the next dream appears
what other synapse will my unconscious
choose to pursue to no immediate
    avail except the true recognition
the mind seems to live without consciousness
grasping onto what might be familiar
for awhile until it is forgotten
only to bring it back for a moment
you are not even awake to know it
