    The kids in costume
appeared at the door and asked
    how much they could take

    some were surprised when
we said all you can carry
    they took two at most

    knowing that others
some of whom they had not seen
    are sure to follow

    All these lost minutes
    accumulate forever
    others written down

    some just forgotten
    still more others generate
    their own momentum

    how long has it been
since the seasons felt so young
    you couldn’t count them

    or lost track of how
    they blend into each other
    the world was ending

    one day at a time
not all at once in a rush
    because we forgot

    what was worth remembering

    You could almost hear
    through the humidity
    as it rained all day

    the sound of canines
    not wanting to go out
    holding it all in

    until the clouds parted
a bit and then they all
    walked by in a rush

    unhappy but relieved

    The books I never seem
    to get around to reading

    all hold their breath
as I walk through the door

    carrying another stack
of books I place next to

    the other books for company
    at some point they will

    eventually grow tired and
    decide to start reading me

    Keep thinking about
    that scene in Hitchhiker’s Guide
    where Ford and Arthur

    arrive on new Earth
    to figure out an answer
    while Golgafrinchans

    call for more meetings
    make the leaf legal tender
    causing inflation

    setting fire to the forests

    Currently a fan
    of the backyard roses who
    decided to bloom

    in such a crazy windstorm

    Steady sound of rain
    occasional thunder crash
    feeling emptiness

    from being outside
    avoiding people in cars
    good night for pizza

    Childhood is meant
    to be relived

    what a relief
    to recognize in

    the impression
    a leaf makes in

    a plate of mulch
    imagination by

    any other means
    satisfied by this meal

    a face waits to be
    young with you

    Easy to forget how much
    you grew up without

    grasping the concept
    just following along

    in costume blank faced
    holding the bag open

    accepting the sweetness
    because it was given

    and understood nothing
    was required in return

    The cats spent
    the evening trying

    to climb the chair
    we lazily left the treats

    they wouldn’t eat
    this morning
