    The rain it raineth
    most of today anyway

    stopping the flowers
    that had arisen already

    while somewhere on a screen
    despite the harrowing

    of this ongoing year
    are reminders that we hardly

    knew ourselves before
or what we had that could be

    shared as experience
    plucked upon the page

    happening all around unnoticed
yet if we are lucky will be

    grounded if not ground of
    being tied to everything

    fire including water
    pouring down the mountain

    so is life

    If I had known
    that every time

    I heard that song
    would be like

    the first time
    I would have

    paid more attention
    the first time

    Continuity is city
    police providing

    every reason to
    believe the verdict

    won’t matter an
    iota to behavior

    innocently not
    unlearned but

    increasingly lethal
    by virtue of

    unthinking obligation
    to unearned authority

    if you must pull
    over pull over in

    a well lit place

    So much talking
    into screens

    will these children
    find anomalous

    the ones that do
    not talk back

    as they have grown
    accustomed to

    zooming in
    on a printed page

    to locate a word’s
    definition

    only to look it up
    elsewhere

    We make each other
    with each other’s creations
    not only the voice

    over and above
    controlling the narrative
    but the silent ear

    listening to tell
us what we want most to hear—
    our importance is

    a byproduct of
the story we get to tell
    in particular

    what others create for us

    There may only be
    a layer or two
    to displace

    though it will take
    abundant effort
    to get at what is

    underneath
    what you find there
    with the right tools

    is perfectly adequate

    You cannot predict
the roads that life will lead you
    —if there are roads—down

    only accept that
    you become an example
    others may follow

    even as the tears
    accumulate in the cup
    somehow you finish

    and start another
while your words if you send them
    reach a world away

    intertwining with
all the ones you didn’t say
    the days of not yet

    you know already will be

    The illustration
    for the reading comes via
    the cat on the tree

    searching for snuggles
    punctuating each action
    with stretches and yawns

    Satisfying spring
    trees make different colors
    on the way to green

    sometimes skip that step
    in less hospitable climes
    world without color

    harsh beyond reason
    thank goodness this wretched plague
    only takes away

    sense of smell and taste
    if it altered perception
    of the whole spectrum

    laid before our eyes
    that is unforgivable
    as it is let us

    appreciate this
    arbitrary palette view
    this color goes here

    and that one beside

    Transformation comes
when you may least expect it
    petals bloom falling

    Days last forever
as long as you are watching
    how the light stays on

    Endings just begin
    one door closes rooms open
    without any doors

    How long till we see
    faces we are longing for
    those who gave us eyes

    Room at the table
    even with all these blossoms
    looking for noses

    Somehow the after
    arrives as all things happen
    already other
