    Change is a trickle
    still shell shocked we
    search for pricks until
    something hopeful comes

    That moment when you find
    the screws and the missing
    hardware for the drawer
    behind the drawer

    Maybe people buy houses
    so they can change everything
in a given structure only after
    they realize it is broken

    A house is not
    a home until
    the cats know where
    to do their business

    The future is
    a big empty house
    that if we’re lucky
    still feels lived in

    Time is turning
    Back the way it ended

    Soon all that will be
    Left of our memories

Will be all those we lost
    We thought would arrive

    Sooner than later
    In this posthumous age

    Incalculable and yet
We try to put a number

On the hugs we have left
Because we know there is one

    We just partake in them
    Despite not knowing

    Where they begin and
Who we will be at the end

    This evening I watched
    A YouTube rip

    Of a DVD
    Of a VHS

    I remember watching
    On television

    Son of the silent age
    Of maybe eight

    Entranced by something
    I never thought

    Was possible
    And surely

    Would never
    Happen again

History repeats not in the same way
But similar to a rhyming couplet
Never to be resolved decades apart
Just when you think you know the whole story
    Revelation peeks behind the curtain
    Unexpectedly anticipated
    By everyone paying attention to
    Intersectional substantiation
Did you really think these legacies would
Be resolved with a sermon or a song
    Or that codependent cacophony
    Of confirmed media institutions
Simply go along with things as they are
Better to leave to get away and far

Strange to inhabit thoughts as they arose
Twenty years ago on the radio
In the car moving into the future
Have I not listened to this song before
Not in this context which is my age now
Perhaps the age this song was written for
When there is less time to look forward to
Than accounting the ways it has been lived
Which way led to this wayward distraction
The closest distance between there and here
    Immediate to this situation
How could these instruments play my feelings
Or construct them as my reality
When I did not know they would play along

    It is difficult
    Not to be
    Oddly specific

    About what we
    Were doing

    Because of
    Its all of a
    Sudden ceasing

    We remember
    The trivial
    Aspects the most

    The frozen pizza
    From the empty
    Supermarket

    After the movie
    Now we quote
    From the director’s

    Commentary
    We almost
    Know by heart

    Eyes open
    At the beginning
    Eyes close

    At the end
    Same as each day
    In between

    So many ghosts
    Trembling
    Where we should be
