Haiku improv from DB to REM
Somewhere out in space
David Bowie is saying—
Left at the right time
The darkest timeline
might even be the brightest
just before the dawn
Huh? What in the world?
Autocorrect, you are drunk
that’s saying something
When you just wake up
and find out the world left you
right where you started
It takes a whirlwind
to knock you back on your feet
or at least sideways
I have always been
a mystery to myself
just listen to this
Can’t get there from here
when the world is a monster
been there, know the way

There was snow in May
and then the snow was all gone
didn’t even stick
Then the sun came out
and it went away again
while a chill wind blew
Then there were locusts
attacking what was left of
flowers in the yard
Then a tornado
fell through the opening of
a short volcano
Then ice caps melted
a huge river overflowed
the known universe
Then a loud bird chirped
and the cat had had enough
and closed the window

Having never run
a marathon this must be
like a marathon
No one ever trained
for something like this even
though we are human
And know things go wrong
here today gone tomorrow
no second chances
So many moments
we will not be able to
relive but that is
No different from all
the other moments we live
but they do happen
Regardless of what
our best intentions may be
time runs on no time
Like the dream you had
for sure you would not forget
yet it slips away
Never to repeat
even as the same dream comes
back to revisit
The same as before
time waits in the universe
only to happen
Too soon it just stops

In the end we are
just pieces of earth walking
around and around
Universal mind
come to understand itself
individual
Yet completely whole
and in that whole unknowing
of greater being
Which is becoming
all the time and forever
another instant
Who is to say God
gets itself a bit lonely
when we go missing
Only we are not
lost for a moment or so
to wipe the slate clean
Living memory
being what it is and all
come home now come home
We wait here for you

Out here we can’t see
the forest for the trees for
they are approaching
faster and faster
and the path has not been set
too much undergrowth
overlaid with weeds
no one can separate from
desirable plants
now we’re really screwed
no way to tell if the roots
have been uprooted
because of the storm
or if in our infinite
wisdom we broke them
with our stupid will

Way back when the earth
might still have a fighting chance
they staged funerals
wearing masks in streets
with air and noise pollution
thick with rock music
and so many crowds
it was a different era
we could use those masks
for real now we’re stuck
inside our homes all day long
if we are lucky
but when we go out
and pass others in the aisle
it’s almost surreal
to think how maybe
since it’s been over two weeks
that I’ve had to shop
for things I’ll mostly
just throw away in the end
the world is cleaner
maybe if we just
stopped moving around so much
the earth could then heal
it’s not that simple
I know but obviously
my mind will wander
it can’t do much else

The question remains
how long will we have to go
until the end comes
for when the end comes
we won’t know that it’s arrived
we will be over
breathlessly lying
in the position in which
we last took our form
the old paradox
goes something along these lines
every step taken
brings us closer to
what might be destination
but we are only
taking one more step
toward one more other step
and then another
if time were not real
we would have to invent it
so we could arrive
in the place we left
before we had forgotten
where we had been born
sometimes all it takes
for a stone to roll away
is to breathe one breath

From this point on
everything that happens
is a metaphor for your life
No matter how dark
the journey may be going
to become darker
Even in lightness
particles become heavy
and empty old dreams
For a split second
I woke and it was still dark
sleep never comes back
Unfortunately
time makes no difference
between light and day
How many sleepless
waking prisons do we take
knowing only more
Unseasonable
doubt starts creeping in again
returning to dust
Words words words words words
you sir are a fishmonger
and unfold yourself
Cat upon my lap
it looks like I’ll be writing
several more haiku
Just kidding I’m not
ever staying up that late
meow and cat meows back

(Weird Haiku Sonnet)
I long for the day
and it cannot be too soon
for this strange season
to revolt and say
the virus has left the room
no rhyme or reason
not warmth nor weather
or empty parkways with cars
that cover their face
consuming terror
with their windows left ajar
gone without a trace
mirrors we hold in our hands
unsanitary demands
